The 12th "EURO SUMMER SCHOOL ON EXOTIC BEAMS" was held at Mainz, Germany, from 25.August to 2.September 2005. The school was intended for Ph.D. students and young post-docs starting to work in the fields related to radioactive ion beams. It consisted of several lecture courses given by specialists in the field, starting from a basic level. The School is an annual event, funded by the EU under contract number HPCF-2001-00101-01, that started off based at Leuven in Belgium. Each year, the School attracts about 50-60 students from all over Europe. Since 2000 it has travelled around various venues in Europe (Jyvaskyla, Les Houches, Valencia, and Surrey). The next school will take place at ECT* at Trento (Italy) in summer 2006. This year (2005) it was organized by GSI-Darmstadt and took place in the picturesque center of the city of Mainz, located at the scenic part of the Rhine River.

Speakers and topics:
Thomas Aumann (Darmstadt): Reactions with exotic nuclei
Klaus Blaum (Mainz): Atomic physics tools in nuclear physics
Oliver Boine-Frankenheim (Darmstadt): Linear and circular accelerators
Philippe Chomaz (Caen): Nuclear theory
Kris Heyde (Gent): Nuclear theory
Dave Morrissey (Michigan): Experiments with in-flight separated rare isotopes
Cristina Volpe (Orsay): New prospects with beta-beams

Special session on nuclear energy and sustainability:
Paul Schuurmans (Mol): The accelerator-driven system MYRRHA
Alfred Voß (Stuttgart): Energy and sustainability

Visit:
A one-day visit of the nearby laboratory for heavy-ion physics, GSI Darmstadt, took place with a guided tour to the accelerator and experimental facilities. World experts gave tutorials on tumor therapy with heavy ions and an introduction to the International Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research FAIR.

Scientific Committee of the Euro Summer School:
Jim Al-Khalili (Surrey, United Kingdom)
Juha Aysto (Jyvaskyla, Finland)
Marc Huyse (Leuven, Belgium) chair
Alex C. Mueller (Orsay, France)
Karsten Riisager (Aarhus, Denmark)
Christoph Scheidenberger (Darmstadt, Germany)
Berta Rubio (Valencia, Spain)
Piet Van Duppen (Leuven, Belgium)
Andrea Vitturi (Padova, Italy)

Local organizing committee of 2005 Euro Summer School:
Jan Kurcewicz, Yuri Litvinov, Tanja Litvinova, Marco Mazzocco, Siggi Raiss, Christoph Scheidenberger
